Carbon steel, also called carbon steel, refers to an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content of less than 2.11%. In addition to carbon, carbon steel generally contains small amounts of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. Carbon steel is mainly classified according to its name: pig iron, carbon structural steel, high-quality carbon structural steel, low alloy structural steel, alloy structural steel, spring steel and bearing steel, tool steel, etc.

S235JR is a European standard non-alloy structural steel, equivalent to the national standard Q235B, which is a carbon structural steel with lower carbon content and is used in many welding, bolted and riveted structures.

Q235 steel is a kind of carbon structural steel. It is equivalent to the A3 and C3 steel in the old standard GB700-79 grades, and is a grade used in Russia's TOCT. The Q in its steel number represents yield strength. Normally, the steel is used directly without heat treatment.

SS400 is a marking method for Japanese steel materials and a judgment standard, which is equivalent to domestic Q235 steel (also known as A3 steel). Foreign standard structural steel is often classified according to tensile strength, such as SS400 (marked this way in Japan), where 400 means that the minimum value of σb is 400MPa. Ultra-high-strength steel refers to steel with σb≥1373 MPa.
